Fu Wenjun
Fu is one of today’s legends of contemporary photography, who has developed the unique «digital pictorial photography» style.
After applying a lavish use of ink on the images, he forms a 3’ x 3’ grid of raised squares that reflect both shadow and space, further expanding the primary inked image.
The effect of layering found in much of Fu Wenjun’s art is an example of how he strives to break photographic norms. For him, a photograph is not merely a depiction to be restricted to two dimensions, as the image can be dissected and expanded so as to interact with space and light in the creation of new artistic perspectives.
His work brings together the practical aspect of photography with the aesthetic nature of other forms of visual arts. By demonstrating the complementary relationship of photographs and other modes of artistic practice, Fu Wenjun transforms what may seem to be an inaccessible message into a highly approachable concept that can trigger critical thought about history and humanity.
His solo exhibitions were were held at the Museu Europeu de Arte Moderno (Barcelona), the National Art Museum of China (Beijing), the Old Summer Palace Museum (Beijing), the Today Art Museum (Beijing), the United Nations Headquarters (New York), the Guangdong Museum of Art (Guangzhou) and other international art organisations.
