René Letourneur

René Letourneur, born on November 26, 1898, in Paris and died on November 16, 1990.

He entered in 1916 as a temporary student at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in the studio of Toulouse sculptor Antonin Mercié. In December 1917, he joined Jean Boucher’s studio. Four years later, in 1921, he was admitted to the Ecole des Beaux-Arts as a finalist in Jean Boucher’s studio and met Jacques Zwobada there. That same year, he won the Chenavard First Prize.

Between 1921 and 1926, he worked simultaneously for the sculptor Gaumont. Three years later, he won the gold medal at the Industrial Decorative Arts exhibition. In 1926, as soon as he first climbed in the box, he won the First Grand Prix of Rome in Sculpture. He left for Rome in November where he stayed until 1930 at Villa Medici. In 1929, the State ordered him to copy the large bust of Pope Farnese, Paul III, in polychrome marble, still preserved at the Palazzo Farnese in Rome. In December, with his friend Jacques Zwobada, he won the first prize in the erection competition in Quito (Ecuador) for a monument to Simon Bolivar, a jury chaired by Maillol.

In 1935, he made the bas-relief “The Tobacco” at the corner of the Quai d’Orsay and two important bas-reliefs and three stone masks for the facade of the theater of Suresnes.

From 1937 to 1943, he exhibited regularly at the Salon des Arts Décoratifs, the Salon des Tuileries and the Salon d’Automne until 1963.

In 1944, René Letourneur˙ published “Contemporary French Sculpture” (Les Documents d’Art, Monaco, April, 1944).

In 1950, he was named as the general secretary of the national union of creative sculptors created by the sculptor Jean Rispal. He is fully committed to the cause of the corporation, to enforce the recent law on the 1%. From this year until 1971, René Letourneur regularly works for the 1%.

In 1962, he took over from Jacques Zwobada as a teacher of drawing at the National School of Technical Education (ENSET), where he remained until 1982.

Between 1962 and 1964, he realized two monumental figures elongated in Roman travertine “The Seine” and “L’Oise”, to adorn the new bridge of Pecq.

In 1970, he puts the finishing touches to a composition by Jacques Zwobada: “Les Lutteurs”. In 1977, he exhibited at the Fonderie de Coubertin.

1986 is the opportunity for René Letourneur to resume his tools. He sculpts for the last time. Jean-Jacques Chaux and Jean-François Sans realize the film “René Letourneur, the sculptor”.
